Social Emotional Learning
Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is the process where people learn and apply a set of social, emotional, and related skills, attitudes, behaviours and values that help direct students.
An effective way in which Social Emotional Learning has been used is through questioning students on how they feel. You can also test students to see how they can handle tough situations through roleplay in an environment where they feel safe. Having a safe space awards students with the ability to exercise calmness and be more reflective when presenting the resolution.
There are instances where anxiety has impacted learner performance. SEL can help learners adapt key competencies that will equip them with skills that will help them manage stressful situations and it will help them reduce feelings of depression and anxiety.
There are five areas of SEL that are intended to help students and their mental health
1. Self Awareness can help students recognize and understand their emotions.
2. Self Management can help students manage their emotions and behaviours.
3. Social Awareness is important because students deal with a lot of people that come from different diverse backgrounds and they need to relate appropriately with these people.
4. Students need relationship skills in order to develop and maintain healthy relationships with others.
5. Decision making is a skill that includes skills such as identifying problems and analysing certain situations.
Social Emotional Learning is a skill that every student needs to manage tough situations. This will help improve your academic performance and it will reduce stress. Student life requires a balance of social fun and academic adeptness. This can all be aided by Social Emotional Learning.
